There are poems about beloved mothers, difficult mothers, expectant mothers and not-to-be mothers; mothers trying their best and mothers falling short. This anthology examines the depth and complexity of emotion surrounding motherhood, and sensitively portrays the darkest thoughts of exhausted mothers.

We wanted to make this book because of conversations we'd had with people about how there are some things you're not meant to say and barely meant to think as a parent, and we wanted to create something which celebrated motherhood at the same time as challenging the huge expectations placed on mothers. It's a beautiful little book, with deep royal blue endpapers and a willow-patterned cover design, and it would make a lovely gift to a friend.

With poems by Deborah Alma, Stephanie Arsoska, Liz Berry, Sara Boyes, Carole Bromley, Laura Chalar, George David Clark, Flora de Falbe, Kate Garrett, Hilary Gilmore, Melinda Kallasmae, David Kennedy, Anna Kirk, Anna Kisby, Peter LaBerge, Eve Lacey, Anna Leader, Marena Lear, Katherine Lockton, Rachel Long, Julie Maclean, Ikhda Ayuning Maharsi, Kathryn Maris, Richard O'Brien, Rachel Piercey, Clare Pollard, Jacqueline Saphra, Kathryn Simmonds, Lavinia Singer, Catherine Smith, Camellia Stafford and Megan Watkins.

Emma Wright, 30, from Winnersh, is the founder of The Emma Press. She launched her business in 2012 and is now based in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. Emma started The Emma Press because she wanted to share wonderful writing with people and create beautiful books. She used to work for a big publishing house in London, in an admin role, but she longed to do something more creative and challenging. She turned to The Prince's Trust and, with our support, was able to achieve her goals through the Enterprise programme. Since then, The Emma Press has published over 35 books and been shortlisted in the Michael Marks Awards for two years running. The Emma Press is an independent publishing house which specialises in poetry books. The list includes themed anthologies, illustrated pamphlets and poetry books for children. The books are all designed – and often illustrated – by Emma herself, and she hopes that they will appeal even to people who haven't picked up a poetry book in a long time.
